The host

Cam Tran

Host and executive producer, Last Wild Media

I have fished for as long as I can remember. I grew up on the water in Michigan, on largemouth bass and bluegill and whatever else would take a line, and it turned into salmon, musky, trout on fast water and saltwater for shark. It never stopped and it never narrowed. I will fish anything, anywhere, any body of water that will have me, and the further from home and the stranger the fish, the more I want to be there.

The other half of it is the places. There is a ridiculous amount of beauty on this planet and most of us only ever see a thin slice of it. Rivers that go green with snowmelt. Forest that runs straight into surf. A crater in the arctic holding water nobody has fished in years. I keep finding more of them, which is the part that still gets me: the list is not getting shorter.

Last Wild Media is those two things in the same frame. We pick a place almost nobody films, work it from one base for two weeks, and go after the two animals that define it, one on land and one in the water. Sometimes it comes together. Usually it half comes together. That is the show, and it is a better one for being honest about the odds.

I am not the expert in any of these episodes, and the show does not pretend I am. The guides, the fishermen, the conservation officers and the families who have lived there for generations are the expertise. My job is to ask what a viewer would ask, keep up, and tell the truth about what happened. I have never caught a golden mahseer in my life, and the right version of that on screen is a man who has, teaching me on the Karnali.

Outside the show I run an acquisition holding company in Michigan. That is what makes the schedule possible and what pays for the first season while the sponsorship side is built.

On camera

Curious and competent, not heroic.

There are two ways to host something like this. One is the adventurer who conquers the place. The other is the person who turns up, asks good questions of people who know far more than he does, and lets the place be the thing that is impressive.

This show is the second kind. It is closer to a Jeremy Wade film than a survival one.

If the host could be replaced tomorrow and it still works, it is a format. If it only works with me in it, it is a hobby.

That is deliberate. The show is built to outlast whoever is presenting it, because a format transfers and a personality does not.
